Fish Polypterus aka dragon fish

Polypterus fish or commonly known as dragon fish is an exotic ornamental fish. Polypterus aka dragon fish is a fish that originally were found living in freshwater habitats of Africa and the Nile basin, particularly in the area of ​​swamps, lebung and around the estuary.


Polypterus is a genus of freshwater fish in the bichir family (Family Polypteridae) of the Order Polypteriformes. The fish in this genus lived in several regions of Africa. Based on the etymology, Polypterus genus name comes from the Greek, which is a combination of words poly (many) and said pteron (wing or fin). So that said fish is a fish Polypterus "finned lot".

Basel Zoo has been successful breeding of this rare fish Polypterus. In December 2005 several Polypterus eggs "hatched" and in early 2006 the six larval Polypterus successfully hatch. Within 2 months of the sixth seed Polypterus reach a size of about 10 cm.
From the appearance of fish Polypterus aka dragon fish is not like other ornamental fish. In general, given the attractiveness of ornamental fish from the unique shape and color of her bright and beautiful, but not so with the fish Polypterus. Fish dragon also has some other primitive characteristics, such as the pectoral fins of meat that glance similar to the lobe finned fish. Fish Polypterus also have a pair of spiracles slit resembling that used to blow air, two lungs with gular plate and double ventral (left lung is smaller than the right side), which allows the fish dragon to get oxygen from the air when it was in waters with little oxygen, by way of a quick swim to the surface and back down.  

Polypterus fish are nocturnal, and eat several small vertebrates, crustaceans, and insects. Dragon fish, Polypterus, also has four pairs of gill arch.  

Polypterus fish body has an average length of about 30 cm, but can reach a maximum length of 97 cm. Dragon fish live in an optimal water temperature range 16-27 ° C and in the range of pH 6.5 - 7. Dragon fish (Polypterus) is a carnivorous fish, they prefer the food in the living conditions in the form of small fish, but it is also willing to eat foods such as meat derived from shrimp or fish.

 When seen from the way the movement in the water, fish Polypterus aka dragon fish is different from other types of ornamental fish. Dragon fish do not swim fast with fins and tail, but the fish Polypterus moving walk on the water using their fins. By way of moving that way, dragon fish does look more like a "serpent" that goes under the water, rather than a fish.
